Pakistan to build first commercial ship since the 1980s

Amid boom times for many Asian shipbuilding nations, Pakistan has announced it will press ahead with its first commercial newbuild project since the 1980s.

Karachi Shipyard will build a 1,100 teu containership for Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) for a bargain price of $24.75m. The Pakistani navy will also be involved in the newbuild project.

“This is a key step toward reducing dependence on foreign shipping companies and promoting Pakistan’s economic self-sufficiency,” the Pakistani government said.
